Bengal notifies relief package for Maoists who want to surrender

The West Bengal government on Wednesday notified a surrender policy for Maoists which was announced by the state on June 17. The notification asked the district administration and police to implement the policy as soon as possible. Significantly, the state government took almost two months to issue the notification, without which any government policy cannot be implemented. All the Naxalite-affected states, including Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa and Chhattisgarh, had announced rehabilitation packages for Maoists long ago.

"The government has today issued a notification. So the policy will be implemented from today. From now onwards, if any Maoist approaches us to surrender and return to the mainstream, we will be able to bring him under the cover of this policy," West Bengal DGP Bhupinder Singh said on Wednesday. "We have asked the district administration to initiate action for publicity of the scheme through the media, by dropping leaflets and announcing the policy in local languages in the affected blocks."
